The Jack & Jill Problem
Dingbats and Downfalls: A Visual Rhyme Reimagined
Course: DSGN 105 Visual Design Systems | Spring 2024
Medium: Adobe Illustrator
In this project, students reinterpreted the nursery rhyme Jack and Jill by creating six black-and-white visual compositions in Adobe Illustrator using only dingbats and punctuation marks provided on the assignment sheet. These elements were used individually or in combination to form visual metaphors that represent parts of the rhyme. The project encouraged students to develop a visual vocabulary within constrained parameters, highlighting the creative potential of a limited symbolic language. Emphasis was placed on exploring composition, scale, illusory space, and positive-negative relationships, allowing students to transform a familiar narrative into an abstract and visually compelling sequence.
