Nōtans (濃淡)
Understanding balance, figure/ground relationships, and principles of visual organization.
Course: DSGN 100 Elements & Principles | Fall 2024/25, Winter 2025

In this project, students explored abstraction and form through the Japanese design concept of Nōtan, which emphasizes the relationship between light and dark shapes on a two-dimensional surface. Using either organic or geometric shapes, students created three non-representational compositions demonstrating symmetric, asymmetric, and radial balance. The project focused on developing a deeper understanding of figure/ground relationships, shape and space, and the principles of organization, particularly balance.
